Our School in the Past and Today...

When our school was...a tobacco factory

(Rhodes under Italian occupation 1912-1943)

The building of our school, located in the district of Agios Ioannis in the city of Rhodes, originally hosted the famous tobacco industry T.E.M.I. (Tabacchi Egei Manifattura Italiana, which means an Italian Aegean Tobacco Factory). The tobacco industry T.E.M.I. was founded in 1926 with Italian-Belgian funds. The Italian administration granted the new industry a monopoly on import, manufacture and sale in Rhodes and Kos, while the smaller islands were allowed autonomous production under competition.

T.E.M.I. for its operation, employed local workers, but it also imported labor from Italy and undertook to buy all the raw tobacco of the islands of Rhodes and Kos. The work in the factory was hard. The workers were working for 14 hours a day and were being paid a small wage.

The factory had 5 modern cigarette machines, facilities and warehouses. It produced cigarettes, cigars and tobacco and used raw material mainly from Rhodes and Kos, but also created blends with the addition of Greek and Turkish tobacco. The production of tobacco and the prices of monopoly sales were controlled by the company, in agreement with the local government, according to a series of contracts, under which T.E.M.I. paid a fixed annual tax.

Our School Today

The building complex, which is better known in Rhodes as the "Tobacco Factory", houses today the 3rd General High School of Rhodes (our school) and the 1st Gymnasium of Rhodes. The T.E.M.I. was built in Rhodes in the period 1912-1943 by the Italian conquerors and remained operational under British rule (1945-47), while in 1947 it was nationalized and renamed the "Rhodes Tobacco Industry". It was permanently closed in 1973. The building has been designated as a Preserved Monument and today belongs to the property of the Municipality of Rhodes.
